Meditations
What is a plant meditation?

A plant meditation is used to call in the spirit of a particular plant during meditation. You can hold an image of the plant in your mind or heart, or even visualize becoming the plant.

The most powerful way to do these meditations is to sit nearby the live plant itself. If it is not possible to do so, it's ok to use an image instead.
Plants are our elders and our teachers, and we can ask them for guidance. Through the silence of meditation, we are able to receive in their messages and teachings.

Many herbalists say that if you notice a plant come to you in your life--for example, growing abundantly around where you live--then you must pay attention. The plant has come for a reason. Meditation is an opportunity to discover what medicine the plant has come bearing.

All plants are recommended as visual aids for meditation only. Please consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any plants topically or internally.

Plant Recommendations

Motherwort
Leonurus cardiaca
for Self-Love
Motherwort is the lion-hearted plant. She helps us find the courage to turn within, to see ourselves fully as we are, and to love all that we see.

Motherwort is commonly said to "parent the parent." She is here to comfort anxieties while also strengthening our hearts. A strong heart is a heart confident in its ability to love unconditionally--and we need to love ourselves unconditionally to know how to love our children in that way.

When meditating on Motherwort, envision your spine as tall and long as her stalk. Imagine her leaves wrapped gently and protectively around your body. Breath deeply into your heart as you ask yourself what message about self-love Motherwort holds for you.

Chamomile
Matricaria chamomilla
for Non-Attachment
Chamomile is beloved for soothing the fussy: fussy kids, fussy adults, fussy stomaches, fussy nerves. She is known for calming those who are not easily satisfied--the people who believe their attachments will bring them joy, then suffer when they get what they want and still don't feel joyful.

Chamomile, with her small, sweet flowers, reminds us to step fully into the present moment and appreciate simplicity. In this space, we are no long wanting. Parenting from this space will allow us deeper connection with our children, as we can accept them as they are in the present moment.

When meditating on Chamomile, ask her for guidance on letting go of the chase for satisfaction. Allow her to show you where you are clinging, then let her soothing energy help you release those desires.

Sweet Flag
Acorus calamus
for Silence
Sweet Flag's energy helps balance and strengthen the throat chakra. This is an important part of any type of silence practice because the goal of silence is deep listening, and the result of deep listening is greater awareness of our choice in response (both in the way we speak to ourselves through our thoughts and the way we speak to others verbally).

A healthy throat chakra knows how to lovingly express truth. We find truth through silence. Sweet flag helps clear the mind and is an excellent aid in the search for clarity, as clarity comes from a still mind.

When meditating on Sweet Flag, ask her to help you move through mental clutter, muddiness, and stagnation. Allow her to wake up your mind, so you can pay attention in a state of silence, rather than feeling sluggish and sleepy. And ask her to help you bring greater intention to your words when you are ready to break your silence.
